About Truth In Death
Our History

Richard and Andrea Burns founded Truth In Death as a result of their personal experience with the killing of Richard's brother Patrick by police in Illinois in 2010. They've experienced first hand the pain and trauma that a state related death and cover up inflicts on a victim's family. Their mission is to do whatever they can to help reduce the number of unnecessary and preventable state related deaths so lives can be saved and other families don't have to go through the pain and trauma that they have had to face. They also have a passion to help families navigate the grieving process when a killing like this does occur.
They have had small successes in the area of facilitating policy change but our system is very complicated and very corrupt. That isn't deterring them, it just means they have to continue to be diligent in their efforts. They have the support of physician groups (Physicians for Human Rights), civil rights groups (Campaign Zero) as well as a small number of attorneys, forensic pathologists and national media contacts. There is no other organization here that offers support to families in the way that Truth In Death does with your "Family Hub". Their hope is to grow that area of the organization. That is where we need your help. Because in America, families have to navigate this minefield on their own. Connecting families will help them heal.
